The Following is an excerpt from our old online Photo Album titled 'Emma'
Emma Mestayer
Born 6/17/06 in Managua Nicaragua
Passed away 9/9/2000 in Walnut Creek California at the age of 94
Emma was born to Esther and Pastor Gutierrez - Uriarte in Managua Nicaragua in 1906. Her family background included her father an employee of the local electric company, of Spanish & Nicaraguan heritage, her mother was of Spanish Basque heritage. Emma came from a family of 5 (two brothers; Ernesto & Raul and two sisters; Maria Hilda (aka: Lila) and Rosibel).
Emma and her late husband Carlos Alberto Mestayer were childhood sweethearts and were married over 52 years. Emma & Carlos had 4 children, Alberto the eldest (deceased 4 years ago). Carlota, Robert and Edward. Emma also helped raise several nieces (Yelbita & Gloria) and nephews (Raul & Pastor Omar) and a few foster children.
Emma loved people and was always kind and generous, she would talk to total strangers who somehow were touched by Emma.
Emma was very talented as a children's clothing fashion designer seamstress and businesswoman, having had her own design business & children's clothing store for about a decade. In Managua she always treated her employees well and some became lifetime family friends.
Emma was godmother to many. Many children considered her as their own mother. She came to the U.S.A. in 1955 because of health reasons and because her sister Rosibel had already established herself in San Francisco, Emma came to the city by the bay. Emma loved "The City", when she couldn't live alone any more and moved to Walnut Creek with her daughter Carlota and son-in-law Ralph Dunhower. Emma missed the city terribly. When she arrived in San Francisco she had a job waiting as a seamstress and was always loved and appreciated by her employer and co-workers.
Emma became a citizen of the U.S.A. and was very proud to do so. Her husband Carlos passed away in April of 1982; Emma was torn by his death. Their love was such that they still held hands everywhere they went even as they aged.
Emma has:
10 grand children: Yvonne, Jeanette, Carlos, Carolina Ana Belen, Rita, Daniel, Michelle, Steven & Christina
19 great Grandchildren
4 great-great Grandchildren.
She is loved very much by all her children and their spouses: Ana Belen mestayer, Ralph Dunhower, Mildred Mestayer and Monique Mestayer (respectively).
